If our Learning Community were a village.........

During our philosophy sessions we have been looking at a book called, "If The World were a Village". The book scales down the population of the world to only 100 people. By woking with smaller numbers we can find out more about our neighbours in the real world and the problems our planet may face in the future. 

In Alveare we took it to the next step and imagined that our Learning Community was a representation of the whole world. When 12 of our children were asked to stand up and represent the percentage of the population that would not have clean water, the children were very surprised. The questions below were some of the immediate things that came to mind.

"What do they drink?"

"Why don't they have water?"

"I wonder what is in their water?"

"How do they survive?"

In order for our children to record their thoughts, feelings, questions and wonderings we set up a thinking routine called "Chalk Talk". This routine ensured that all the 'voices' in our LC could be heard as it is designed to be a 'conversation' conducted silently on paper. The children moved freely around the room and contributed their ideas to the 'conversation'.

Below are some photos of the children's work which demonstrates their ability to share their original thoughts, make connections and build on their peers ideas as well as write their own questions and wonderings about the topic. 

We will use their questions and ideas to further our philosophical inquiry.
