Inquiry - The importance of giving feedback
Term two has started smoothly
and we are continuing our inquiry into our local area. We have been researching
the way Brunswick East has changed over time with a particular focus on the
Merri Creek. Using inspiration from the Jeanie Baker book, “Window” the
children are drafting artwork that depicts the way the creek and surrounding
areas looked during specific eras.
Last term the groups had
already completed a first draft of their artwork. Many children felt that their
work was finished and they were ready to move onto the next phase. We showed
the Learning Community the clip, “Austin’s Butterfly”. This clip highlighted to
the students the importance of giving constructive feedback and being open to
accept and improve on your work. The link is attached below, please have a

Following a group discussion
about the clip the children were asked to place their first drafts on display
with a blank piece of paper next to it. Their peers were then able to move
around the room and give written feedback based on the draft. The children did
this exceptionally well and were very constructive and detailed in their
feedback. When the groups returned to their artwork and read the feedback they
were very accepting an appreciative of their peers honesty and suggestions.
So…… as you can guess they
were now all itching to have a go at a second draft, keeping the feedback that
they had received in mind! It was a powerful session and learning experience. Well
done to the children of Alveare for being brave, acting in a mature way and
trying something new!
